A puppy rescued from a priority trip to certain death will be available for adoption on Friday.
The 5-month-old Schnauzer-poodle mix, named Guess, has been at a Minneapolis shelter since Jan. 25, the day that Loring Station postal workers discovered the dog in a package headed to Atlanta, Georgia. Had the sealed box continued to an airplane's unheated, non-pressurized cargo hold, the puppy would have died of either asphyxiation or hypothermia. The former owner of the dog, Stacey Champion, has been charged with animal cruelty over the incident and is scheduled for a hearing on the case Feb. 28. After a ruling that the dog not be returned to her before her case was settled, she failed to post a bond Monday that would've paid for Guess' shelter expenses until her criminal case was settled.
The puppy is ready for his ordeal to be over on Feb. 18, when he becomes available for adoption. The shelter's pet adoption policy is usually first-come, first-served and involves screening potential owners to make sure the animal will fit into their lifestyle. Because of the flood of interest in Guess, though, there will be a drawing of prospective owners who meet the screening criteria.
At 2 p.m. Friday, those who are interested in adopting Guess should be at Minneapolis Animal Care and Control, 212 17th Av. N., by 2:00 p.m. on Friday to enter the drawing. Afterwards, up to 10 names will be drawn. Those people will fill out screening applications to determine their compatibility to adopt. Of those who are eligible, another drawing will be held to grant ownership of the dog. The proud new owner will have to pay adoption fees, pet licensing costs and sign an agreement to have Guess neutered on "Spay Day," Feb. 22.
Guess is not the only pet available for adoption at the shelter. Check out MACC's other available animals on PetFinder.com.
