Today is the Puppy Bowl! (And also the Super Bowl, if that’s what you’re into.) And while there’s no real teams to root for in this tail-wagging, wet-nosed event, there still is something to root for: adoption.

Sure, the puppies are absolutely adorable, but did you know the reason the Animal Planet airs the special is to increase adoption rates?

This year, their referee (“ruff”-eree if you ask me!) spoke out on the importance of adoption in this video.

Last year 10,000,000 people watched the Puppy Bowl. Sure, I could have written it in words, but just to see how many zeros were involved is somewhat incredible.

This year 63 puppies were chosen for the Puppy Bowl, which is actually shot in October. It can take months of editing to find the most adorable footage, so don’t be surprised if all of these puppies have already gone home to their forever (“fur”-ever) families.

There are a ton of cute puppies this year, as always, but my pick for MVP is Chestnut. Chestnut is a Labrador Retriever / Australian Shepherd mix (just like my dog) and looks like he’s in it to win it.

Check out all the cute pups today at 2pm on Animal Planet. It’s over before the big game even starts, so you don’t have to pick one or the other.

And yes – you can totally have a Puppy Bowl party. It’s nearly as cool as a Super Bowl party.
