Punxsutawney Phil partners with Pennsylvania-made Slinky (Video)

For “Groundhog Day 2012” the Pennsylvania Tourism Office announced an exclusive deal with Foursquare, which was proof enough of the seriousness that Pennsylvanian’s hold regarding our beloved Punxsutawney Phil. Yesterday, Jan. 8 the Pennsylvania Tourism Office upped the ante with the announcement of a partnership with the official toy of the commonwealth, Slinky.

Last year’s Groundhog Day celebration included a custom “PA Groundhog Day 2012” badge with location-based social media platform Foursquare. Foursquare users who follow Visit PA can unlock the special “2013 Pennsylvania Groundhog Day” badge by checking in at any location and shouting "groundhog" from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 2. This new tradition continues for Groundhog Day 2013 with a custom badge available to Groundhog fans worldwide, but an addition has been added to this very special celebration.

For the first time, a Slinky in a customized Groundhog Day box will be bestowed upon the first 500 Foursquare users who unlock the Pennsylvania Groundhog Day Foursquare badge at Gobblers Knob in Punxsutawney, Jefferson County. In order to receive the official to of Pennsylvania, participants will need to show their check-in to the attendant at the Groundhog Day RV.

Slinky Master Tom James, the son of the toy's inventor Richard James, will be onsite to sign the special boxes. Additionally, those who receive a Slinky at Gobblers Knob will have a chance to win the Ultimate Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Getaway, which includes a showcase of some of the finest things that Pennsylvania has to offer.

In a tradition dating to the 1800s, Groundhog Day is celebrated each Feb. 2 in Punxsutawney, Jefferson County. According to folklore, if the groundhog emerges in the early morning and sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of wintry weather. If he does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring. Groundhog Day may be folklore to some, but for those that take this day seriously and aren’t able to trek up to Gobblers Knob, a webcast the Groundhog Day festivities will be livestream HERE.
