Punxsutawney, PA sets up for annual 2014 Groundhog Day celebration

Saturday morning, hundreds of people in Punxsutawney, PA began to set up for the annual Groundhog Day celebration in the United States. Punxsutawney, PA celebrates the event each year with the appearance of Punxsutawney Phil in the early morning, a street fair, food vendors and music. Planning for the annual event has taken months to prepare for and hundreds of people are involved in preparing the town for the 2014 Groundhog Day.

Saturday, reported the weather forecast on Sunday for Punxsutawney, PA is cloudy all day. Millions of people in the United States that believe the Punxsutawney Phil legend; if Punxsutawney Phil doesn’t see his shadow tradition follows that an early Spring will be seen. If he sees his shadow, then another six weeks of winter will follow.

The Weather Channel announced Saturday that they will air live from Punxsutawney, PA all day Sunday. Over the years, Punxsutawney Phil hasn't had the greatest track record in predicting an early spring if he sees his shadow or not, according to an article published Saturday by the Huffington Post.

Saturday, 35,000 people began their travel to the small town of Punxsutawney, PA for the annual event.

Punxsutawney Phil has been coming out of his hole on Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania for several centuries. February 2 is known as Groundhog Day; the movie of the same title with Bill Murray made the name famous in the 1990s. Groundhog Day was first mentioned in the diary of Pennsylvania storekeeper, James Morris on February 5, 1841, according to Wikipedia he wrote:

Last Tuesday, the 2nd, was Candlemas day, the day on which, according to the Germans, the Groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters and if he sees his shadow he pops back for another six weeks nap, but if the day be cloudy he remains out, as the weather is to be moderate.
