Punishment sought for elk poachers

The Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council, made up of 14 First Nations, in Canada is now offering a $25,000 reward leading to the arrest and conviction of poachers responsible for the killing of at least 11 elk in a protected herd near Port Alberni on Vancouver Island. The herd had been transplanted to the Island during the mid 1990’s.

Chief Jeff Cook of the Huu-ay-aht Nation told a news conference on Tuesday that the nation is “opposed to the killing of elk for sport or fun and the fact that much of the animals were left behind troubles them.”
In addition, Larry Johnson, director of lands and natural resources for the tribes voiced his own anger over the slaughter of a scarce animal that he's “never been allowed to hunt.” However he has confidence that they will eventually be caught and brought to justice.

"I think it's more than one group, due to the tips that are coming in, and it's because the unprecedented amount of money that's being offered here.”

He also believes that the poachers are experienced hunters because they are “quickly able to cut off the best cuts of meat, and aren't cleaning them like you would if you were on a normal hunt. It's like they know how to dislocate and pull off a hind quarter in seconds, minutes." In fact, he noted that in most cases only 25% of the meat has actually been taken with the rest of the carcasses discarded.
