Punderson Sled Dog Classic races offer fun for all

You don't have to go to Alaska or to the Yukon to see some great sled dog races. All you have to do is head to Punderson State Park in Newbury, Ohio (about 30 miles east of Cleveland) on Saturday, January 11 and Sunday, January 12 to watch the dogs run at the Punderson Sled Dog Classic.

Punderson Sled Dog Classic Sponsored by the Siberian Husky Club of Cleveland, this free event attracts mushers from across Ohio and other surrounding states.

Last year's event attracted more than 1200 people (both participants and observers) with over 60 sled dog teams racing. Races will cover 1-6 miles through the woods and across open fields with the best view for spectators occurring on the golf course. Teams of 6 dogs, 4 dogs, 3 dogs and 2 dogs will be competing.

Start time for the races will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday and at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Finish time will be approximately 2 p.m. Mushers will be competing for cash prizes and trophies.

Snacks (including hot dogs and warm beverages) will be available for purchase in the Golf Pro Shop.

Parking at the golf course is strictly for the mushers this year. Check out the Punderson State Park beach lot for general parking.

Importants Note: If the weather does not cooperate and there is not enough snow, the Punderson Sled Dog Classic may be cancelled or rescheduled. Currently the alternate dates are February 22 and 23.
