Punchless Wild fall in Philadelphia

The Minnesota Wild continue to struggle on the road with a 4-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers Monday at the Wells Fargo Center.

The Flyers scored two goals on five shots in the first period. They led the whole way after Luke Schenn blasted a shot past Niklas Backstrom on the Flyers first shot on goal one minute and 52 seconds into the game.

The Flyers (17-16-4) extended their lead to two goals on a tic-tac-toe cross-ice passing play from Claude Giroux to Jakub Voracek to Wayne Simmonds. The goal came 10 seconds into the team’s first power play. Simmonds later added an empty net goal to seal the victory.

Mikael Granlund one-timed a pass from Jason Pominville with nine seconds remaining in a 5-on-3 power play advantage. Ryan Suter extended his point streak to a career-best seven games with a pass to Pominville.

The Wild (20-14-5) finished the game one for five with the man advantage, and to make matters worse, they only had one shot on goal with the extra player.

The Flyers re-claimed a two-goal lead seven minutes and 46 seconds into the second period when Giroux deflected a shot by Braydon Coburn past Backstrom.

The Wild are 29th in the NHL in scoring and the team scratched Zach Parise. Being without the team’s second leading scorer did not help the team turn around its losing streak.

Parise was likely scratched to give his foot, which he injured on Nov. 25, time to heal. He was expected to miss four weeks, but returned four days later. He hasn’t been the same player since.

The Wild return to action Friday against the Winnipeg Jets at the MTS Centre.
