Pumas UNAM kicked off the Apertura 2014 with a 3-1 victory over Queretaro FC at La Corregidora Stadium in central Mexico on Friday, July 18, 2014 in La Liga MX action. This is the first time the universitarios begin the season with a win since the Apertura 2012. They also end a 21 year streak of not winning at La Corregidora.
Pumas began with an early goal. In less than 120 seconds the universitarios had put the ball in the net. Argentine Ismael Sosa opened La Liga MX after receiving a center from fellow countryman Daniel Ludueña. The "hachita" volleyed to the center to Sosa who was inbound and simply pushed the ball past the keeper for the 1-0.
Then the game tempo changed as both teams struggled to make the keepers work. The attacks came from both sides of the field, there was no clear dominant team. However, the Mexico City side maintained higher possession of the ball.
The visiting team increased their lead on a misfortune by the Queretaro defense. Ludueña again centered, this time to Matias Britos who completely missed the ball. The pass landed in front of Sosa who shot on first touch, but defender Ricardo Osorio changed he ball's trajectory sending it into the net for the 2-0 in the 40th minute of play. Pumas took the lead into the break.
When Queretaro played better Ludueña reappeared. In the 56th on a free kick the Argentine put the ball over the wall and into the near top corner. Goalkeeper Edgar Hernandez dove but could do nothing to prevent the ball from entering his net. Pumas took a commanding 3-0 with 32 minutes left in regulation.
A lack of concentration in compensation time gave the home side the honor goal. Angel Sepulveda Sanchez fired at close range, but Alejandro Palacios blocked the shot. After a brief melee in the area, Sanchez recovered the rebound and on the second shot hammered the ball with full force for the final 3-1.
Pumas will host Chivas de Guadalajara in their next game, Queretaro will travel to Guadalajara to take on Leones Negros.
