Pumas continue good form, America surprised in final minute

Pumas UNAM continues their upward climb in the Clausura 2014 defeating Leon FC 2-1 at the Nou Camp. This time the universitarios moved into the 4th position on the league table of La Liga MX with 10 points, two behind Club America and three behind leader Cruz Azul. America was shocked on the pitch of the Azteca Stadium in week 6 falling 1-0 to CF Pachuca.

Argentine Martin Bravo took a big lead in the goal scoring table with the brace he scored against La Fiera. Bravo reached six goals doubling his lead from his current competitor. Luis Montes was able to put one in the net for the current champions. It looks like Leon is suffering from a “champion’s slump” having won a single game of six and a pair of draws.

Leon played their usual attack game, but that gave up spaces that Pumas was able to take advantage of. The felinos opted for a defense and counterstrike strategy that paid off in the 9th minute. On a counterstrike Bravo was able to pierce the net sending Leon on their way to their fourth game without a win.

The constant attack by the home-side gave them an opportunity to break the net. Leon played their hearts out but could not get past the Mexico City squad’s defense. The esmeraldas were also without veteran leader Rafael Marquez. The former FC Barcelona defender missed his second game in a row due to muscle pains.

Bravo was able to take advantage of another counterstrike in the 68th minute to put the ball in the net for the 2-1. With the victory Pumas was able to defeat the panzas verdes for the first time since Leon returned to the maximum circuit.

Up next for Pumas, a home match at the Olimpico Universitario Stadium to take on Atlas FC. Leon faces Brazil’s Flamengo in Copa Libertadores then travel to take on CF Monterrey at the Tecnologico Stadium in northern Mexico.

America falls in final minute

Antonio Mohamed’s team lost their second game of the season 1-0 against CF Pachuca at the Azteca Stadium. The eagles were superior on the pitch, but they could not get the ball into the net. The hero was Hirving Lozano who entered the game in the 84th minute. In less than five minutes on the pitch Lozano, who was making his debut, put the ball past Moises Muñoz.

The eagles were without Argentine Rubens Sambueza who is serving a two game suspension. In his place, Miguel Layun performed brilliantly.

America remains in the 2nd position of the league table, one point behind leader Cruz Azul. While the eagles have 12 points, they have been inconsistent this season. They lost their first game against Xolos in Tijuana, now they lost a home game.

Pachuca will host Atlante FC in their next game, America will travel to Morelia in week 7.

Saturday’s games:

Tigres UANL 1, Santos 1

Atlas 1, Monarcas Morelia 1
