With home runs 46 and 47, Albert Pujols is only three blasts away from breaking his personal record for most homers in a season.
Pujols' homers scored three runs total for the Cardinals, who won the game 5-1 against the Brewers on Wednesday night.
The slugger may also beat his record for most RBIs in a season; with 124 currently, he needs only 13 more for a personal best.
"I don't know how anybody could ever be better than he is," said pitcher Adam Wainwright, who got his MLB-leading 18th win with help from Pujols. "Ever. No offense to Henry Aaron and all those guys. I'm sorry, Hank. Albert Pujols is really, really good.
Pujols remains as modest as ever about his power at the plate.
"I'm putting good swings every at-bat," he said. "That's it. I'm not a home run hitter. I'm a line-drive hitter who is pretty strong and can hit the ball out of the park. I don't tell myself that I'm a home run hitter. I go out there and try to use the gaps, try to hit the ball in the gap."
The Cardinals have now surpassed the Dodgers for the best record in the National League. The continue to lead the Cubs by 11.5 games in the NL Central. The team starts a series against the Braves on Friday.
