It was the first order of business Thursday when the new governor of Puerto Rico, Alejandro Garcia Padilla, activated the National Guard to combat drug running and weapons smuggling.
According to Fox News, Guard soldiers will be positioned in airports and shipping ports across the island territory to add another level of security over and above police protection.
The activation of some 50 soldiers and airmen will be in effect by February, although the government maintains they will not be armed or overtly visible to the public. They will be monitoring the country’s coastline and providing technical support including the use of radar and other highly-sophisticated technology.
This isn’t the first time Puerto Rico has called their National Guard into service to help police the island. In 2010 the Guard was activated to protect their 4 million citizens from out of control crime.
Drug and weapons smuggling has become an international problem.
Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States and the Puerto Rico National Guard is a component of the U.S. National Guard.
