Puerto Rico not blinded by Cotto

Cotto will not have the blind support of all Puerto Ricans

I dare you to visit any region of the Philippines and ask 100 random individuals, "who will win between Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto?"  An overwhelming majority will respond Manny and I would be hard pressed to even imagine anyone picking his November 14 rival.

Why?  Pacquiao is their idol, one of the few dominate global sport legends they have in their pantheon and he has aroused their souls through boxing exploits.

As for Miguel Cotto, while a legitimate top ten pound for pound fighter with a solid career, he has never truly captured the hearts and minds of his nation's fight fans.  Cotto's ultra-cool personality has not drawn in Puerto Ricans, unlike many of the island's past greats such as Felix "Tito" Trinidad and Wilfredo Gomez - who are national heroes till this day.  Something about Miguel has kept his people at a healthy distance.

Before today, if I had to predict the reaction of 100 Puerto Ricans to the question, "who will win Manny or Miguel," my guess would be a solid segment would pick Manny.  Why? Because Puerto Ricans are some of the most knowledgeable fans and they are not hero-worshipping Cotto; he has not won them over like Manny owns the Philippines.

Puerto Rican fight scribe Carlos Gonzalez of Primera Hora did what I just proposed, video camera in hand, and hit the streets of San Juan to ask Puerto Ricans thoughts on the fight.  The result?  A split bag.

A handful selected Cotto, siting reasons such as, "Cotto has the speed to neutralize Pacquiao," or "Cotto has the experience and power."  Yet many did give Pacquiao the nod with responses such as, "Pacquiao is much too fast," "Cotto has become soft," and "Cotto gets cut to easy."

There you have it fight fans, Puerto Rican boxing fans - among the best informed in the world and far from myopic regarding their own fighters.

Mummy Marley Does Not Get It

Michael Marley, New York Boxing Examiner, wrote about how important belts are to fighters and mentioned some silliness about Shannon Briggs keeping his heavyweight belts at home for photo opportunities.  Typical babble from boxing's old boys network.

If belts are so important, which they are not in the current watered down landscape, why is Miguel Cotto good to go without his WBO welterweight belt on the line and thus bypassing the three percent sanctioning fee to be taken out of his purse to defend the strap.  Come on, I never understood why guys should pay to defend or win a belt.  Shouldn't these organizations be paying the fighters?

Looks as if Cotto, and others, are getting hip to the sanctioning bodies archaic ways.

As you said, Ricans are knowledgeable boxing fans, so it's no wonder they're not hero-worshipping Cotto.
So does this statement reduce Trinidad- and Gomez-worshippers to unknowledgeable boxing fans?

You look like you're Hispanic or maybe a Puerto Rican who somewhat say that Puerto Ricans are the most inteligent fans in boxing and Filipinos are blinded.. Pure bias.. Who will believe you?

  • bandido 2 years ago

  • EXAMINERAUTHOR 2 years ago

Cotto is scared to lose the fight and his belt, that's why. He is simply not sure of himself. Come on Miguel, be man enough. Put your title on the line. Don't deny Manny of his 7th title.

  • alpha 2 years ago

This writer is bias coz hes Hispanic.. Saying Puerto Ricans the most inteligent. The writer is so lame.

  • ric pick 2 years ago

because majority of puerto ricans believe that manny will win, their just true to themselves. Like puerto ricans Pacfans are also true to themselves they believe that Pacman will win. How many times Pacfans proves themselves correct? when all the experts wanna be like you says otherwise? Now, can you blame them? Think man think..

  • malakas 2 years ago

how dare you generalize us filipinos, as if you really know who we are, or specifically, how we really see this matchup! yes we do admire pacman, what with what he has achieved in his career, but we are not blind and ignorant as you indirectly suggests we are to easily pick pacman as the clear winner. i myself is torn between the two fighters (that has been the case since the DLH fight), and i know several of my friends share the same thoughts. i'm even receiving a bet now for cotto, and the reason i'm not yet taking it is because i am still really torn.

of course if you're referring to who we WISH/HOPE should win, that's easy - definitely pacman! he's one of us, what do you expect?! now if you think that's being "blinded" or ignorant, please, and i say please, i dare you say that to all the british hatton fans, or to all puerto rican trinidad/cotto/calderon fans, or to all mexican chavez/marquez/morales/barrera/margarito/arce fans, and let's see.

    please, don't generalize us.

  • alpha 2 years ago

Im a Filipino but we dont love Pacquiao just beceuse his a fellow Filipino. Filipino and the world love Pacquiao because of what he has accomplished.

Mr. writer, do you know that Filipinos love boxing even before Pacquiao. Im a Tyson fan before and Morales fan too and they are not Filipinos like me.

Your so LAME telling people youre so inteligent and Pacquiao's Fans dumb and blinded..

There goes Ricardo Lois again always belittling the Pacmaniacs. Well ofcourse he's hispanic, a dumb one.

  • Ricardo's lover 2 years ago

Nope. Myopic is not the term for Filipinos. I rather call them "dystopic", in a worst-case scenario they imagine the universe their own. This is a society completely run by media commercialism. In other words, they are desirous of being recognized as the effect of their hero's exploits inside the ring. So many stupid and idiots but few are chosen.

Hey Lois, you're one of those dumb writers who easily jump to conclusions...we filipinos love boxing and a number of boxing fans here are knowledgable with the sport, FYFI. You're one of those people who think because we didn't produce the same numbers of world-class boxers like PR and Mexico, our fans are not as knowledgable as them...eat more protein to nurture your brain...I even picked up Marquez to win against Pac in their March 2008 fight because of his performance in the 1st bout...please sto hating and start thinking. Peace

Ricardo, do not disrespect Filipino boxing fans..You are trying to appear us,Filipinos, to be less knowledgeable in a sport you feel you are damn expert..If Marley and Pacquiao cares for the belt and Cotto not, then be it! you dont have to insult us with your bigtime stupidity!!

I agree, paying this organizations just leads to corruption. It's ok if they charge like the IBO, they do need to pay someone to make the belts.

Or Ring Magazine, who gives it free ? Where do they get the money to make their belts ?

  • Combuzz 2 years ago

Ricardo Lois is an idiot, if us filipinos dont know sh1t about boxing tell us why we've been right all along in our pick(Manny Pacquio). We've had champions in the past, have u heard of Pancho Villa, Ceferino Garcia, Flash Elorde, Luisito Espinosa, Rolando Navarette, Gerry and Dodie boy Penalosa. We've been right about pac for the past 3 fights u bet against him, we've been right about how speed kills. You've never even been to the philippines if you have you would know alot of people thought Oscar Larios would beat pacquiao last time i was there. It's been Pacquiao's consistency that we have been puttin our money down for him. Why would we put Pac as an underdog hes been so consistent he hasnt lost a round in 3 fights, he hasn't gotten hit in 3 fights, while Cotto lost to Marga and won a belt against an unkown and lost to Clottey.

  • kr 2 years ago

  • Sandman 2 years ago

Wow Ricardo, I'd respect you a little more if you didn't mince your words and just came out with it instead of using comparisons and such to belittle us. Ricans are good people and yes they have a solid passion in boxing and have produced great fighters. It's the same with us, the difference is, we're on the other side of the globe. What do you guys know about boxers from our side of the world? Yeah exactly...ALSO, I CAN SAY CUBANS KNOW NOTHING ABOUT BOXING. YOU HAVE NO BOXERS, NEVER HAVE NEVER WILL. There you go us Filipios can play that game too.

  • lomwell labrador 2 years ago

Between Cotto and Pacquiao,my choice is Pacquiao, the reason is obvious, Pacman's speed is faster indeed than Cotto. I'm a Filipino but it's just incidental, my decision is based on my own objectivity. I would favor Cotto if, he's really good than Pac even if I'm a Filipino. The thing is Pacman is more favorable to be victorious than the Puerto Rican.

  • teknok 2 years ago

lol.. lois is correct about majority of filipinos would choose pacquiao over coto but
    he forgot 1 thing..

cotto is not as popular in the world as pacquiao is.

I mean ,for example go to thailand and people would surely pick pacquiao over cotto.

Pacquiao is already a well known , household name in puerto rico. They know what he can do.

  • ricanfan 2 years ago

ofcourse not all puertoricans are rooting for cotto because they loved manny pacquiao too. he is exciting to watch and i agree to most filipinos responded this article that this is nonesense better to the author find another job.

  • NEW ERA 2 years ago

WHAT'S YOUR PROOF PUERTO RICANS ARE FAR FROM MYOPIC REGARDING THEIR OWN FIGHTERS. THAT'S ONLY HERESAY. EVERY COUNTRY REGARDLESS OF RACE IDOLIZES THEIR EXCELLENT ATHLETES. THOSE WHO CAN GIVE THEIR COUNTRY AND PEOPLE PRIDE AND GLORY. i DON'T KNOW TO CUBANS.

  • Rican 2 years ago

Manny knows Cotto will be a tough opponent and Manny is afraid of Cotto's power. Why else would he demand a catch weight? If Manny is so good and such an overwhelming favorite, why didn't he fight Cotto at 147? The question the writer of this stupid article did not ask Puerto Ricans was: Will you be rooting for Manny or Cotto? The overwhelmin majority will be rooting for Cotto.

  • theotherone 2 years ago

    another dumb article!

just for you info the months and days before the pacquiao de la hoya fight, a good percentage of Filipinos bet against Manny Pacquiao. Personally, a survey among my friends was 50-50. That's how objective Pinoys are when it comes to boxing. You are confusing knowledge with the support MP gets. I can tell you 100% wanted MP to win, but not all believe that MP can not be beaten, especially when the opponent is 2 weight divisions away from where he was previously fighting (not that they were proven right as we know now MP retired ODLH).

The same case for Cotto, all Pinoys want him to win, but not all are convinced he can do it given Cotto's credentials. You may not understand it, but betting against MP here in the Philippines is regarded as sort of a "emotional hedging". some bet a little knowing if MP loses, they get a consolation. If MP wins, they forget about losing their bet, and celebrate anyway. Intiendes?

  • Marshall 2 years ago

"Who will win the next fight" is an opinionated question Mr. Lois and the answer of an individual to such question depends mainly on his own personal views and preconceived notions. Such question does not need a genius for an answer because the answer is a simply a choice between two alternatives.

It is akin to a question "What do you prefer - a Honda or a Ford?". While most of Americans would probably choose Ford, Japanese would surely choose their own.

I noticed myself that before the Pacquiao-Hatton fight, almost of the English people who came to watch the fight picked Ricky to win the fight during most of the telecast interviews. This does not in anyway makes them boxing "un-knowledgeable" simply because they err in their choice.

Just as your opinion that most Filipinos "worship" Manny, it is your opinion and yours alone. No matter how inaccuarate it is or how moronous the choice of adjective is readers would probably swallow it.

  • boyarate 2 years ago

wow, thats your basis? thats pretty lame stuff. i guess ur saying if half picked the rival other than their own, then theyre knowledgeable. thats pretty lame logic. of course theyre knowledgeable because they ARE knowledgable (i mean the puerto ricans), but by just comparing the results of surveys taken from both countries, one showing their utmost support for their fighter, and another being very objective, you already came up with that analysis? you should do better writing. i mean, i get your point and all, but, you just come off being a bit racist. i mean, the country's just showing support for their fighter, and you indirectly call them 'morons'

  • julito43 2 years ago

    damn it.....

  • PR 2 years ago

I guess at the moment Filipinos are the most knowlegeable people with regards to boxing. They consistently pick Pacman to win for years now and their always proven correct. Can you deny that statement Lois? How about you did you make the same predictions for Pacman's last 3 or 4 fights. If not then your more idiot than them big time.

  • Mehicano 2 years ago

Hi Ricardo, I have agreat respect to you... But you know what filipino is not blind followers but a great supporters... The filipino knows who is the most athletic and skilled fighter between the two (miguel and manny). Why go to philiipines and Puerto rico? just ask the white people their in the US who loves boxing and they will tell you its Manny Pacquiao not cotto. Filipino can give you their guest in a fair way. Just like what happen in Manny and Oscar fights some of filipino does'nt want that fight because Oscar is too big. Some officials in sports and some senator in the philiipines they want manny license to be cancel if he continue that fight. But most filipino support him anyway.......research this<--....

In this fight against cotto, I believe Manny has a great risk in this fight than cotto actually.
Ask Corey T. Willinger (inside fights)and he will tell you why :)
