Puerto Rican tribute brings back Beatlemania to stage where Beatles once played

The Beatles, then called the Silver Beats, played at Lathom Hall in Liverpool on May 14, 1960. In 2011, a Puerto Rican Beatles tribute group traveled to the city to play on the same stage and the result was pretty wild.

The Juke Box Beatles, as they're called, kicked butt, reports Fergy of the Liverpool Beat website. In the video at left posted on the site, you can hear they have a very authentic sound.

Even more interesting was what happened when the group's bass player jumped into the audience. Fergy said it provoked an exciting reaction among the "Lathom Girls."

"Talk of kidnapping the drummer in the boot of Sheila's car were swiftly dismissed as common sense prevailed," he said.

The show also featured a few Merseybeat veterans who were on the Liverpool music scene when the Beatles were, including Faron of Faron's Flamingos, Geoff Nugent of the Undertakers, Nick Crouch of the Mojos and Sam Hardie and Ken Shalliker of Kingsize Taylor and the Dominoes, who played at the Lathom the same night as the Beatles.

According to Bill Harry, founder and editor of Mersey Beat, the Silver Beats' gig was more of an audition. They were booked for the following week, but skipped it to go out on tour with Johnny Gentle.
