The evening of Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, brought about one of the strangest endings ever in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL). The game was a tight one and it appeared headed for a possible tie in overtime, but that was until the puck landed in the pants of the Phoenix Coyotes' goalie and he backed into position in his own net and scored a goal for the Buffalo Sabres.
With the game netted at one in overtime, a battle for the puck ensued near Phoenix's goal, and that is when things started to get weird.
Phoenix goalie came out of his net as the battle for the puck went on, and the puck got knocked up into the air. Coyotes' goalie Mike Smith had no idea where it was, but it then landed in the back of his pants and just sat there.
Smith didn't realize where it had landed so he got back into his defensive position and slid into his net to protect it.
That was when the game ended because the puck was in the back of Smith's pants and it ended up in the Coyotes net when he slid back into place.
Mark Pysyk of the Sabres was credited with the goal, his first of the season, and it gave Buffalo a 2-1 overtime victory. While it's still somewhat early in the season, this was a hard loss and one of the strangest ever as it will likely be known as the "puck in the pants" ending.
