Louisville, Ky. -- Last week Louisville Metro Animal Services found a case of canine distemper in their facility. Before the week was up, they found three of their dogs had canine distemper. When distemper breaks out special cleaning procedures must be used. For this reason, LMAS put out a plea to the public to come adopt the dogs before they had to be killed for space. The public overwhelmingly responded.
From Sunday to Tuesday of last week MAS adopted out almost every dog in its facilities. Tuesday they offered a $9 adoption special. In all, over 80 dogs were adopted. Susan Neumayer, interim director of LMAS, said over half of the dogs were adopted by rescue groups. Due to this overwhelming response, no dogs were killed at LMAS.
LMAS has implemented its special cleaning procedures and has not had another case of canine distemper. The shelter is not yet at full capacity regarding dogs, but they are getting close. They are now around 3/4 full. The public continues to respond and adopt animals from this shelter, thus preventing precious animal lives from being snuffed out before their times.
As with most shelters, LMAS is in constant need of supplies. If you can, please visit LMAS’ wish list page and donate an item today.
