Public invited to attend Jeffco Schools community forums this week

The Jeffco School Board will host six community budget forums this week to seek public input on priorities for the 2014-15 budget.

The forums are schedule for the following dates and locations:

  • Monday, March 3, 6 - 7:30 pm at Standley Lake High School and Evergreen High School
  • Wednesday, March 5, 6 - 7:30 pm at Chatfield High School and Arvada West High School
  • Saturday, March 8, 9:30 - 11 am at Lakewood High School and Dakota Ridge High School

The forums will take place in the school library, except at Lakewood High School where the forum will meet in the school's lecture center.

Those who plan to attend may also want to read the letter to stakeholders that outlines the goals the Jeffco School Board will also consider when planning the budget.

Results of the last month's Jeffco community budget survey are available on the Jeffco Schools homepage.

Comments made on the budget survey are also available for review.

During the school board's Feb. 18 discussion about the forums, board member Lesley Dahlkemper said one of the values of community engagement is that "it provides us an opportunity to learn from our community what they value most."

Dahlkemper also pointed to the large turnout for the budget survey, noting "We had 13,000 people across Jefferson County respond to the budget survey" before being interrupted by board president Ken Witt, who commented sarcastically, "Sometimes three and four times."

An analysis by Jeffco School's IT staff found Witt's statement to be untrue. With the exception of one household with 18 responses (out of a district-wide total of 13,101), the average number of responses from a single household was 1.71. That number is consistent with the reality that two parents or a combination of student and parents in a household might have taken the survey.

A more detailed analysis of IP address use for the survey and the potential for fraud is included at the end of the budget survey results.
