Public HSUS tax relays much

Eugene, Oregon residents don't spend their time looking at the tax records of the HSUS so would not be seeing the funds as they are manipulated by the Humane Society of the United States.   The last thing anyone wants to do after April is to look at another tax form, right?  To expose the actual facts and figures, this information can be seen on:  http://www.humanesociety.org on the multi page documents for public viewing.

One half of one percent goes to actual animal care as per the tax form.  You do not need a calculator to compile this after viewing the IRS # 990 online.  More than 1/2 hour can be spent reviewing the tax document HSUS is required to produce for the public.

Scan the huge percentage of fundraiser money, the nine digit figure that supplies pension funds, the International network of companies under the Humane Society of the United States thumb and make sure you breathe.  Your breath will be taken away with the facts of disproportionate amounts used on mailing, travel and advertisements.

The Humane Society of the United States is an international organization promoting global issues under the United States name.  Tax records list the thousands of dollars given to foreign countries while animal welfare in the United States suffers, euthanizes over 8 million animals a year and receives little or no funds to remedy puppy mill raids the HSUS conducts.  Facts on the tax form support HSUS agendas well.   Because HSUS is a 501 (c) 3 organization, their non profit tax info is public information. Not all entities are 501 (c) 3 within the entire network of HSUS making some funds hidden from public knowledge since they are not tax free and remain private.

     Furthermore, Eugeneites can call 800- 808- 7858 or fax questions to :  301- 548- 7700.

More public info:

Board Chair:  Anita W. Coupe

CEO:              Wayne Pacelle

Address:         2100 L Street, NW

                       Washington, DC 20037

The Humane Society of the United States is touting an antiquated star rating to cajole donors into thinking they are a 4 star rated charity.  Charity Navigator, http://www.charitynavigator.org untwists that fact to prove a three star rating.  Furthermore end of 2008 their efficiency rating was One star.

Making use of the public HSUS tax form online will open your eyes to perhaps considering donating to your local "No Kill" shelter for animals.  You will then know all your money goes directly to the facility and residents.

The current 2009 public HSUS tax form is not available, perhaps due to an ongoing investigation by two senators questioning public deception by HSUS regarding donations.

Oh, I think this writer did do her research and continues to do research before she writes anything about HSUS, and sure she appreciates your subscription. She's correct you know, Mr. Doppler, HSUS' efficiency rating is one star, as dutifully reported. By the comments on Charity Navigator, there are more distressed folks than just a few animal lovers.

Sounds like the HSUS needs to direct more funds to helping the animals.

Roberta, Did you do any research at all? Research is that thing that writers/reporters do before they commit their reputation and that of their paper to print. It means that one who researches a subject uses diligence and systematic inquiry or investigation into a subject in order to discover or revise facts and theories. Reporting does not mean one accepts the press releases of corporate front groups engaged in smear campaigns against reputable organizations and present those lies and misdirections as the truth. If that were the case the Examiner could save itself the middleman (you) and just print whatever garbage the Center for Consumer Freedom hands them.

Since Roberta Baxter includes only a general link to the HSUS website, let me provide one that brings readers directly to our 2009 annual report: humanesociety.org/about/overview/financials/. The HSUS meets all of the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance standards. Our organization's overall Charity Navigator rating is three stars out of a possible four. The HSUS is not affiliated with local shelters, having been founded to tackle broader animal protection concerns like puppy mills and factory farming. We also work on animal issues beyond U.S. borders (e.g. marine mammal protection, street dog sterilization programs, etc) through our affiliate Humane Society International.

Roberta - you are an embarrassment to the Examiner and I hope they suspend your writing privileges. Your math is wrong, your facts are wrong, and your motives, well, they're clearly wrong. Your apparent agenda against the HSUS shows me that you have something to fear of the HSUS and since HSUS supports responsible breeders, then the natural conclusion is that you are not. What are you so afraid of Roberta? HSUS gonna shut down your puppy mill?

  • Amy 1 year ago

Roberta is very correct and the HSUS is nothing but a powerful, rich lobbying group dedicated to ending the pet-owner bond and devoted, via their attacks against the agriculture industry, to force the vegan (unsustainable on this planet!) lifestyle on everyone. Their are fanatics and if their demands were being made by any religious group in the country, the public would be in full cry.

  • alice in LALA LAND 1 year ago

Humane Society International ( a branch of the many armed HSUS) has a ONE STAR rating.. HSUS itself has been downgraded.. how come? I will let Hilliary and Madison and JDS answer.. the HSUS has over 100 million in assets ( including an office that they have not used in 12 years but have been paying for donor dollars)bit we are supposed to tout them becasue they spent a paltry 1.3 million.. not gonna happen..

  • John Doppler Schiff 1 year ago

@Amy: Really? End the pet-owner bond? I guess that's why so many HSUS staffers have beloved pets, and the CEO of HSUS has a dog and three cats... They want to revel in the thrill of breaking their own pet-owner bonds, right?

It's not HSUS that's parading around making fanatic claims about ridiculous conspiracy theories. That would be you, Roberta, and the HumaneWatch smear campaign.

HSUS only wants to eliminate animal cruelty and ensure that animals are treated humanely. They have never "attacked agriculture". They have attacked specific inhumane and disgusting practices like veal crates and battery cages.

The actions of the HSUS consistently support their goal of eliminating cruelty. Any other "agenda" is in the minds of the conspiracy theorists.

  • danny 1 year ago

international arm of the HSUS, one star in all categories.

    HSUS, one star in efficiency.

all right there in the charity navigator web page.

  • danny 1 year ago

Wayne Pacelle owns one dog and three cats, really?

HSUS is attacking agriculture every chance it can. Eggs in california? check. Just about anything right now in Ohio? check. If the HSUS is so concerned about animals, where is their model farm where they show how to raise animals humanely? oh wait, they don't think any animals are really raised humanely enough.

  • Cynthia 1 year ago

Thank you Roberta!! Excellent article and as for the HSUS employee(s) responding bah humbug but then its expected

Legislate the animals out of existence by causing them all to be N/S and then of course the statement from old Wayne-o about one generation and out...sound like he wants us to have our pets? Of COURSE NOT for those who try to hide the FACTS.

Once again, GREAT ARTICLE and ACCURATE <G>!!

  • Megan Wilson 1 year ago

    Directed at John:

What does it matter what their star rating is? Check your facts before you believe the wool the HSUS is holding over people's eyes. A close friend at my work used to work for the HSUS and had to put down hundreds of healthy, happy animals, all because of the HSUS's allotted adoption time for animals. I don't care about the dollars, I care about the animals themselves.

Read more about the HSUS's practices and beliefs. Not from THEIR website either. Branch out from what you're being spoon fed. I hope you are not this naieve in all your beliefs.

  • C. 1 year ago

So you've pointed out that they are an advocacy organization that tries to change the laws and prevent the systematic abuse of animals from the exploiter industries, rather than focusing their work picking up the residue from the abusers. Farm Sanctuary and other great organizations do this work, while HSUS and other organization try to change the law to prevent the massive suffering and harms caused by thoughtless consumers and cruel abusers. Lobbying against agribusiness and the biomedical industrial complex takes money, and the only way that laws get changed to protect animals is if people draw attention to the rampant abuses. If you care about animals, it's not change the laws or donate to local humane shelters--IT'S BOTH!

  • Therese 1 year ago

I see that the HSUS has employees and lobbyists here to negatively comment on this well written article. There are many, many former HSUS donors like me who are now speaking out against the questionable practices of the HSUS.

None of the HSUS critics will ever address factual problems with HSUS fundraising or activities. I haven't seen it ever. Thank you for shining a light into the dark recesses of this questionable organization.

  • John Doppler Schiff 1 year ago

Therese, exactly what issues has Roberta raised that haven't been answered?

The absurd claim that HSUS spends $100,000,000 on pensions? Over $71,000,000 of the 2008 HSUS budget went to programs. Answered, indisputably.

The false claim that HSUS spends less than a half percent on animal care? Answered, indisputably.

The claim that HSUS spends a disproportionate amount on mailers, travel, and advertising? Missed that one! That figure includes shelter promotion, public awareness campaigns, Tipline reward announcements, transportation in large-scale rescues, and much more. Disproportionate? To what? HSUS has MANY programs, and they operate in all 50 states and 38 nations around the world. Let's see you -- or any organization -- do it as effectively for less money.

The false claim that HSUS is under "Congressional investigation"? The opinion of two senators from states with the WORST animal cruelty records do not make an "investigation". It just shows their corruption

  • Hillary, HSUS 1 year ago

@Megan - I think you're confusing the HSUS with local animal shelters. We don't have an "allotted adoption time for animals" because our organization doesn't run shelters; we advocate nationally for animal protection issues that go well beyond homeless dogs and cats.

WHAT DOES ANY OF THIS HAVE TO DO WITH DOGS IN OREGON????? You are clearly a shill for the horrendous Animal Enterprise Institute, or some similar group of cretins. You don't care about animals, only about defending people who exploit them. WRITE ABOUT DOGS IN EUGENE OR SHUT UP.

  • Wayne Vick 1 year ago

Is John Doppler Schiff the new Sarah Barnett? His comments here and elsewhere are pompous and nasty. He regurgitates the grossly inflated HSUS statistics from their press releases and self-aggrandizing annual report. He uses Pacelle's phony "root causes vs symptoms" justification for HSUS's corrupt practices. JDS should read "Unhealthy Charities" by James Bennett and Thomas DiLorenzo for a brilliant critique of the American Cancer Society.

HSUS really needs to recruit some new spin doctors. Hillary is a drone, utter bore, as dynamic as a corpse (and less effective.)

  • Jim Anderson 1 year ago

The HSUS uses deception in it's quest for money and has ever since it's current President, Wayne Pacelle came on board. Of course if his links to the Chicago underworld are true, that's par for the course.

Since this site won't allow url's just Google this:
"The HSUS, the MOB, and the 'Black EGG' Humane Society of the United States"

Also, little known because it's not been reported in our "free" press that the HSUS is being sued under the RICO ACT (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations act) by Feld entertainment.

Another thing not reported by our free press was the effort this year by thousands of Americans to have the IRS do an investigation based on tax evasion and fraudulent use of their donations. The IRS doesn't comment on current investigations but based upon the IRS contacting those thousands of Americans for "more information", I'd bet they are investigating!

LOL..Wayne with a pet.. no way... Wayne owns no pets.. and certainly not a cat.. his girlfriend owned a cat.. when the cat "bothered Wayne" he called his girlfriend to "remove the cat'.. here is what Wayne says about pets.

“I don’t have a hands-on fondness for animals…To this day I don’t feel bonded to any non-human animal. I like them and I pet them and I’m kind to them, but there’s no special bond between me and other animals.” Wayne Pacelle

    and..
"When asked if he envisioned a future without pets, “If I had my personal view, perhaps that might take hold. In fact, I don’t want to see another dog or cat born.” Wayne Pacelle

Way to go Roberta.. keep up the good work.. not one of the HSUS supporters can defend the truth..even when it smacks them in the face..

For years, Pacelle did not even have a pet. But when Gutleben moved in with him, she brought along her cat, Libby.

"He's interesting with animals," said Gutleben, 30. "He doesn't want to bother them or invade their space. He's like 'Hello, Libby.' " She imitated a formal, masculine voice, then laughed. "I just want to swoop her up and bury my head in her fur. He just lets her be. So, of course, she just crawls on the counters and he lets her crawl up and sit on his chest. If he needs to work, he'll ask me to remove her."

Pacelle said he has always loved animals.."

Really?? boy funny way to show it.. this article is from the LA TImes in July of 2009..when you want the cat "removed' you ask your girlfriend to do it.. if I were Gutleben I would run like hell from a person like that.. for many reasons.. not all of them having to do with animals

It may surprise some people, but we do have engaged and active supporters, who care about the HSUS, and don't appreciate people spreading misinformation. Yes, Hillary and I are both employees of HSUS, and are proud of where we work, and want to spread the word about animal protection.

To those that are open minded and interested in facts, please check the HSUS website, and if you're interested in our finances, read our Annual Report.humanesociety.org/about/overview/annual_reports_financial_statements.html For those interested in focusing on how charities spend their money, you may want to take a look at CCF, which gives over 90% of it's donations to Rick Berman's PR firm..humanesociety.org/news/news/2010/05/investigative_report_berman_1.html

BREAKING NEWS...Yesterday, Tiger Woods's favorite mistress Rachel Uchitel walked off the set of Celebrity Rehab. This morning, I contacted Dr. Drew to recommend that our favorite habitual liar/publicity addict Wayne Pacelle replace her.

Hillary, Sarah or Angry John Dopp: please have HSUS's own Dr. Bernie RSVP directly to Humane Society Hollywood supporter and current Celebrity Rehab trainwreck ERIC ROBERTS.
And remember - NO LOBBYING OR FUNDRAISING IN THE HOUSE.

P.S. Sarah if the HSUS "financials" as described in the Annual Report were part of a legal document, you'd all be in the slammer. And I would miss you. Welcome back.

  • Lynne's Honey 1 year ago

Hillary, why are you not touting the rating given to you by The American Institute of Philanthropy? Could it be that your rating there is now a D? I also note that Humane Society International, one of your subsidiaries, which is essentially bankrupt, is given a one star rating. To me, that debases the ratings of Charity Navigator. I'd give it no stars because it does not appear to be putting the brakes on its spending to mactch or be less than income.
