The National Marine Fishery Service (NMFS) is conducting a series of public hearings this fall and taking public comments on proposals to control the incidental catch of Atlantic bluefin tuna. The proposed rule would alter Draft Amendment 7 to the 2006 Consolidated Highly Migratory Species (HMS) Fishery Management Plan.
The public is welcome to attend the hearings and send comments by Oct. 23. For details, see http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2013-08-22/html/2013-20513.htm.
The rule would cover all incidental catch, including landings and dead discards.
NMFS officials and the HMS Advisory Panel are meeting this week to discus the proposed rule. It would increase reporting requirements and ensure compliance with international standards.
The public can attend and speak at the following public hearings. All run from 6 p.m to 10 p.m.:
Wednesday, September 18, 6-10 p.m., Manteo, NC
Thursday, September 19, 2013, Charleston, SC
