Fox’ new series “The Following” may have introduced a new generation to Kevin Bacon and received rave reviews, but that isn’t stopping the Parents Television Council (PTC) from calling a boycott. During the pilot episode that focuses on Bacon’s character Ryan Hardy as he apprehends escaped serial killer Joe Carroll (played by James Purefoy) and unveils a deranged, psychopathic cult following, a young woman, brainwashed by Carroll, disrobes in a public setting then stabs herself in the eye. The PTC feels the depiction of such blatant violence, especially in light of the Sandy Hook, Newtown, Connecticut shooting tragedy, will only inspire further bloodshed in real life.
PTC responded with the following statement, “Just earlier this month, Vice President Joe Biden met with representatives of the entertainment industry to discuss meaningful solutions to the problem of gun violence in America. Predictably, the entertainment industry deflected any blame for violent impulses their products might inspire in the viewer or video game player. Instead, this is an example of what they produce. Vice President Biden has heard from Hollywood. Now he needs to hear from you.”
The Following airs at 9 pm ET and 8 pm CT, making the program easily accessible to younger viewers. Do you agree with PTC’s comments? Is “The Following” too violent to air, or do you think it should be moved to a later time slot? Are you going to contact Vice President Biden to let him know your views regarding “The Following?”
