'Psych' season 7 premiere recap: Shawn goes rogue after Henry was shot

"Psych" season 7 premiered Wednesday, Feb. 27, with "Santa Barbaratown 2," which showed the aftermath of Henry's shooting.

Only "Psych" could end one season with the shooting of a main character and begin the next with the character's son bringing him to a hospital and telling him things like, "I'm pretty sure like 90% of gunshot wounds are psychological. Here's the good news: The body's actually designed for this sort of things," and "I'm just saying, it's important for him to keep moving, maybe walk it off, this isn't serious, this isn't like having appendicitis," and then follow that up with, "You've gotta save him, that's my dad!" That's exactly what happened with Henry and Shawn, and while Henry survived being shot, he was still suffering in the hospital as Chelsea appointed herself his caretaker and kept on talking while he could only lie there, unable to speak due to the tube down his throat. So it was no surprise that one of the notes he wrote to Shawn was "Pull the plug" or that his first words once extubated were to get rid of her (if only they worked). And while it may not be so easy for Shawn to express himself ("I love you…r French toast"), father and son did share a moment at the end of the episode once the case was solved and Henry was off the ventilator.

But while his father recovered in the hospital, Shawn went off with Gus—giving him no choice and without letting him use an out—after Jerry, and it was while he was trashing the place that Shawn actually stumbled across a few useful clues in a hidden weapons room and a lead to the Red Chief Firing Range. Things didn't go so well at the firing range, with their attempt at playing entrepreneurs ending with them banned from the place after Shawn shot up the range to try to meet the owner, only to find out that man was Jack. And they lost that lead when Jack was shot in front of them, but upon returning to the range—disguised (with half-beards)—the pieces began falling into place. Jack's shooter was Yest, whose new job was security for Julian Drake. Though they were thrown out of a book signing when Shawn taunted Yest with what he knew and subsequently ended up sitting on a land mine, they did end up at the Feed Everyone warehouse, where they put everything together. Drake wasn't supplying food to war-torn nations. He was supplying weapons. And it was there they ran into an undercover FBI agent, who ended up providing Shawn with Jerry's location.

After the first attempt to infiltrate the house didn't go as planned—the Blueberry ended up in half—Shawn's second attempt, with Lassie's help, went much better, thanks to the distraction of ipecac in Chinese food and explosives…under Gus' rental Cranberry. Shawn did confront Jerry, and despite Julian intervening, Shawn was able to take him down while Juliet showed up and shot Jerry before he could shoot her boyfriend.

Woody and Lassie were great sources of comedy in "Santa Barbaratown 2" and each in the perfect way for their characters. Woody kept showing up at inappropriate times with body bags, at Henry's hospital room ("Awkward, I'll come back later" and "I'll just hang out a minute") and outside the Psych offices while Shawn and Gus were sitting on a land mine. Meanwhile, the season premiere did show that there's a side of Lassie that cares about Shawn (though he wouldn't admit it). But Lassie was far more impressed than he should have been in Jerry's hidden weapons room. "This is hands down my favorite land mine," he told the others as he played with it, even going so far as to take photos of the room. "It's for my decorator," he explained.

"Psych" season 7 airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on USA Network. What did you think of "Santa Barbaratown 2"?
