Get this: Psy is ending "Gangnam Style" on his birthday, which happens to be on New Year's Eve. The Korean rapper and reigning YouTube king, says the song became too popular and it's time to move on. After performing the song on "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve," Psy said the party is over...sort of.
MTV News noted in its Dec. 31 report that Psy is ending "Gangnam Style" on the last day of the year to pay tribute to a wonderful and record-breaking year, while celebrating his 35th birthday.
"Gangnam Stye," the whimsical and quirky dance song has taken the world by storm. Whether you're young or old, rich or poor, happy or sad, you likely heard the song or seen someone try their feet at the moves.
Ellen and Britney did it, a U.S. lawmaker did it, the Navy did it and yes...your next door neighbor did "the Pony." No, seriously; just ask them.
However, Psy decided to end "Gangnam Style" and go out with a bang for the last day of 2012. What better place to do it than in Times Square during "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve?"
"The song became too popular, and so you start to have some concern about its life period. I'm really working hard on a new single right now, and I'm not saying ['Gangnam'] is ending on 'Dick Clark' — I still have a lot of invitations to perform it ... I'll be in Paris, and in February I got invited to perform in China, and I've still got to do promo. So let me say that in America I need a new single because 'Gangnam Style' got too popular, so I've got to write a new single," he says during an MTV interview.
To his point, he is trying to evolve as an artist and prevent the one-hit-wonder-blues most niche artists find themselves in after overnight success.
The Korean phenom is doing a bit of forward-thinking and already has his eyes on another single, with an emphasis on raising the bar. However, with the current success of his single, it's hard to fathom how he can pull that off.
Nonetheless, give him credit; he is trying to be taken as a serious artist and not go the way of Rebecca Black, you know, the chick who sang "Friday."
Relax; Psy is ending "Gangnam Style" only symbolically. Before he bids adieu to the song, he has to get past all the gigs he has lined up.
