The 40th annual American Music Awards took place on Nov. 18, 2012, at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles. Here is what this American Music Awards star said backstage in the American Music Awards press room.
PSY and MC HAMMER
Psy, how long did it take for you to come up with “Gangnam Style” song and dance?
Psy: Four days. Honestly, I practiced [MC Hammers] move 20 years ago. So I’ve done it for 20 years.
Did you coordinate your wardrobes before your performance together?
MC Hammer: When Psy and I first talked about doing this together, one of the things that he actually asked me was, “Hammer, are you going to wear the [parachute] pants?” I said, “Psy, I only wear the pants on special occasions. I would call this a special occasion, so I’ll bring the pants out for this occasion.”
On a lot of things, we thought alike. He didn’t even know what I was wearing until yesterday. I told him [I’m wearing] all white, and [he’s wearing] all black, and it worked out.
MC Hammer, why was this the right time to join someone on stage in this way? What s about Psy that you think is so great?
MC Hammer: First and foremost, his personality and his character. Scooter Braun connected us, and when Scooter connected us, and I spoke with Psy, I knew right away that he’s a good guy. I like working with good people. I told him that dance has only moved the planet four times.
Four times has a solo dancer shifted the planet. James Brown with his dance shifted the planet. Michael Jackson with his dance shifted the planet. Yours truly, Hammer Time, got to shift the planet. And now Psy shifted the planet. So to be with somebody who’s shifted the planet and have fun and is a very humble and respectable guy, I loved doing it, and we had a great time together.
