Psycho Donuts opened in Campbell, California two years ago. When they first opened, there was some controversy about their name and shop decor. Some of the locals thought that they were making fun of people with mental illnesses. The padded cell and doughnuts named "bipolar" or "head trauma" seemed insensitive and rude.
But their goofy approach and sense of humor won over the critics and their goodies proved too delicious to resist. They even have an art gallery and since I not only write about art, but make it, that's a double-dip temptation.
How can you not love a place that writes about itself as the " world's first and only light-hearted asylum for wayward donuts." The staff dresses up like nurses and provides "bubblewrap therapy."
Psycho Donuts doubles as a quirky, offbeat art gallery, offering inexpensive original artwork from local artists. While you're at Psycho Donuts, put on a costume and take a picture in the Psycho Padded Cell; and check out their collection of eclectic merchandise.
If you are ever in the Campbell area, or are in downtown San Jose, I recommend a stop at Psycho. I visited the downtown San Jose location last month, when I was in the area. The donuts are not baked on site, but come in from the Campbell location twice a day, so there is less of a selection. But there are still a bunch of flavors available, including a delicious vegan doughnut that tasted like a orange creamsicle.
I figured that a vegan, fruit-flavored doughnut is practically a health food, right? And if you stand up while you eat it, that cancels out all (most? a couple?) of the calories?
Right?
