PSN Store: A look at what was delayed and could be delayed due to PSN outage

Aside from preventing Playstation 3 owners to play their favorite games online, the Playstation Network outage has also prevented the release of a number of downloadable titles. Let’s take a look at what has been delayed so far and what could be delayed as the Playstation Store outage continues through at least the end of May.

The Playstation Store was last updated on April 19 and two updates have been skipped since. There are potentially at least three more PSN Store updates that will missed between now and the targeted full restoration of the PSN on May 31. So far, we will definitely have to wait on the following PSN games that had release dates between April 26 and May 31, 2011.

  • Beyond Good & Evil – Ubisoft
  • Dungeons & Dragons: Daggerdale - Atari (unconfirmed May release)
  • Gatling Gears - Electronic Arts
  • Hydrophobia: Prophecy - Dark Energy Digital
  • Outland - Ubisoft
  • Streets of Rage 2 - Sega
  • Under Siege - Sony

Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 was also scheduled to be released as a downloadable title and PS3 owners have also missed out on demos for LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean and Red Faction: Armageddon. This doesn’t include games and demos that had unconfirmed release dates or the copious amounts of DLC add-ons or planned Playstation Plus freebies.

The damage from the PSN outage don’t stop there though as inFamous 2 has definitely been affected by the outage as its mission creation and sharing tools were supposed to be in the middle of testing now prior to its June 7 release. While the game won’t miss its release date, expect Sucker Punch to have to put in some extra post-release work.

Of course, the real downside for consumers has been the loss of online gameplay and the recent releases such as SOCOM 4, Mortal Kombat, Motorstorm Apocalypse and Portal 2 which have significant online multiplayer offerings. Even this week’s release of Brink will be affected by the lack of PSN. Fortunately, there is no online component to next week’s release of L.A. Noire but PS3 owners will be unable to download the pre-order DLC until PSN Store is restored. Sony representatives have said that online play will be restored before May 31.

The worst case scenario for Sony at this point is if the restoration of the PSN Store is delayed until later in June. Aside from upsetting  Call of Duty: Black Ops already has had a shaky run on the Playstation 3 and that would only be made worse if the release of the Escalation Map Pack is delayed due to the PSN Store being offline past the anticipated early June release date.
