Amazon's new PlayStation Network department
Ah, Amazon.com. Is there nothing you don't sell?
Thanks to a new partnership between the PlayStation Store and the merchandise giant, Amazon has added PlayStation Network games to its already massive inventory. By simply visiting the new PlayStation Network department in the online store, gamers can purchase games for the PlayStation 3 and PSP, including some of the PSone classics and additional DLC for games. Upon purchase, buyers will receive a redemption code to enter in the PlayStation Store on either their PS3 or PSP systems.
As of today, October 7th, Amazon has over 200 PlayStation downloads available for purchase.
At first glance, it seems like there is very little point to this idea. One will still have to visit the online store with a PS3 or PSP at some point for the actual download, so why buy it elsewhere first?
The Director of PlayStation Network Operations, Eric Lempel, said that most people are more comfortable with using Amazon's store. The layout is far more familiar, and it's a little easier to surf through Amazon's listings than on a PS3 or PSP. In addition, by purchasing games solely with Amazon, people will not have to open a Wallet account with the PlayStation store. Since most people already have an account with Amazon, they can now avoid storing their credit/debit card information with another online store.
Not only that, but it's far easier to peruse the PlayStation library at work on a computer than using an actual PlayStation system. The boss might frown upon an employee leeching the office Wi-Fi with his or her PSP to download a game or two.
