PSN downtime extended to Friday morning for maintenance [Update]

The Playstation Network was supposed to be down for 12 hours Thursday as maintenance was performed on the online network. However, Sony announced that Playstation 3 and PS Vita owners will have to wait until Friday morning for the service to return.

"Though estimated to end at 8pm PT tonight, maintenance has been extended to tomorrow AM," the official Playstation Twitter account said in an update to followers.

Update: The Sony Japan website has been updated to say the maintenance window will last through 5 p.m. EST on Friday. This is also 2 p.m. PST and 10 p.m. GMT.

Update 2: The Sony US Twitter account confirmed the delay by saying, "PSN maintenance is require more time than expected, and is now expected to complete tonight. We apologize for the inconvenience."

Update 3: The Playstation Network was restored some time Saturday morning.

Online play and apps were supposed to be available during the maintenance window for those that logged in before it started. Unfortunately, some users have reported that they were dropped by the service and naturally haven't been able to log back in. While disappointing, this news shouldn't be too surprising if Sony is doing work on the servers.

We will try and provide updates on when PSN will come back online. You can also follow Sony on Twitter and this post on the Playstation Blog.
