Rob C. Mahan, 42, passed away last Friday after a three-year battle with cancer. Mahan, a native of Ashland, Kentucky, spent six years as the adult group lesson supervisor and training manager at Beaver Creek. He also spent one season as the training manager for Vail.
Rob was one of the good guys. He had an infectious smile, was a southern gentleman, and was fun to be around. We competed against Rob and his Powder 8 partner, A.J. Jones, in the annual competition multiple times. The Powder 8s competition places teams of two head-to-head against one another. The teams try to make an "8" shape with their turns and are judge on accuracy, roundness, turn shape, synchronicity, and symmetry. Rob and A.J. were always a force to be reckoned with. After a competitive run against them, it was nothing but high fives and laughter largely due to Rob. His energy was contagious and he was a tremendous skier with an amazing touch and feel for the snow.
Rob will surely be missed. The next time you are out on the hill, make some turns for Rob. He would do the same for us. Here is a link to his hometown paper to learn more: Rob C. Mahan.
