Psalm 47: Shout to God with a voice of triumph

See also

What is the power of a shout? What is the power of a raised voice?

Some praises, thanksgivings, and worships are very subdued. Some quietness declares that God is working within the soul and the soul might be so overwhelmed with awe of God that the believer cannot shout. But there is a time for loud praises and loud shouts to the Lord. There is a time to clap the hands in applause to God or to clap the hands in singing. Why? Because God is worthy. The believer should then step outside of himself and shout praises to God. For the quiet person, this might very well be a sacrificial thanksgiving of praise because the desire to be proper has to die.

How does the baseball fan feel when his team triumphs over the visiting team? How does the athlete feel when he or she has reached the appointed goal and even gone beyond it? Joyful. If God Himself shouts, can not we?

The Lord has done great things; so many of these glorious deeds we take for granted. Some of His great deeds we do not quite believe. Some of His great deeds for our behalf or on the behalf of others we do not understand.

But we are called to praise Him for what we do understand.

1{To the chief Musician, A Psalm for the sons of Korah.} O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.

2For the LORD most high is terrible; he is a great King over all the earth.

3He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.

4He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.

5God is gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.

6Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.

7For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.

8God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.

9The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham: for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he is greatly exalted.
