The Vanishing of Ethan Carter was introduced for PS4 yesterday during Sony's Gamescom 2014 press briefing. With the game already heading toward PC later this year, this is yet another interesting title making its way to PS4 in 2015.
In many, many games these days, we see combat as a central component, however, in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, that is not the case. Adrian Chmierlarz, who is the founder of The Astronauts, spoke about The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and revealed the game will not be featuring combat of any kind.
"The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a story-driven mystery game that focuses entirely on exploration and discovery, featuring no combat or explosions of any kind. If our game leaves any scars, you won’t be able to see them.
"The game is played through first-person perspective, whereby you explore and interact with the world in order to discover the truth behind Ethan’s disappearance," Chmierlarz said.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is certainly separating itself from a myriad of games by not featuring any combat. It's certainly a bold move, especially when you consider the horror-type elements detectable in the game's PS4 trailer.
The game seems to be very focused on exploration, discovery and investigation. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter will be debuting on console first for PS4. Chmierlarz talked about how players will experience the world of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.
"You conduct the investigation on your own terms and at your own pace. Although we did put a few scary bits in the game, there is no need for sedatives. It’s less about pure terror and more about, as our writers put it, 'clammy unease'.
"While it features a private detective and quite a few mental challenges, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is not a puzzle-ridden game. Our focus is on atmosphere, mood, and the essential humanity of our characters. It’s a game that tries to offer immersive storytelling — an escapist experience of discovering the secrets within another world," Chmierlarz said.
The Vanishing of Ethan Carter will be available on PC later this year, with the PS4 release of the game coming sometime during 2015. No time frame has been pinpointed by The Astronauts, but we expect to hear more sometime next year.
