Outspoken and brilliant Wedbush analyst, Michael Pachter recently released his industry forecast for the next three years. He sees a bright future for the industry as a whole but has already decided who will win the next generation console war. He expects "Sony's PS4 to 'win' the next console generation.”
He estimates that 37.7 million PS4 systems will be sold by the end of 2016. That is 30 percent higher than his expectation of 29 million Xbox One's sold. He estimates that the Wii U will only reach 20 million units sold.
He has also projected that by the end of 2016, the Wii U will sell for $150, the PS4 at $299, and the Xbox One will cost $350. "We think 'winning' is important to both companies," Pachter said, "and it is possible that Microsoft will reduce Xbox One pricing far faster than we have forecasted. Should hardware prices come down faster than we have modeled, it is likely that hardware and software sales will grow faster."
Sony's PlayStation 4 has already taken the lead in Europe. It has out shipped Microsoft's Xbox One by 166,000 units. The PS4 netted £181.8 million ($248.5 million) while the Xbox One netted £144.5 ($197.5 million).
Could this be a sign of things to come? The industry as a whole is poised to grow this year. Software sales will also see a sizable increase. While Pachter has cast his vote, only time will tell if the PS4 will prove to be king of the next generation consoles.
