Following up on the official reveal of the PS4 last week, Sony has now revealed that they may implement a tier-based subscription model to take advantage of the variety of new online functions that will be available with the PS4.
As reported by VideoGamer on Feb. 25, SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has stated that Sony may look into presenting various tiers of membership with the PS4, such as "gold, silver or platinum."
"As more and more services and contents become available digitally, we'll have more of an option to create attractive packages. So hypothetically we can look at different models – like a cable TV company.”
"We could have gold, silver or platinum levels of membership, something like that. We can do subscription services when we have more content – especially now that we have the Gaikai technology available. With one subscription you have access to thousands of games – that's our dream."
Looking at how well the PlayStation Plus membership has been performing on the PS3, these additional services that are granted with the PS4 will provide Sony with the perfect opportunity to give consumers access to a selection of premium services at one price. As displayed with PlayStation Plus, Sony has proven that they are dedicated to delivering a tremendous amount of value with their subscription services.
Taking this into perspective, gamers should not be worried about memberships such as these affecting the overall free services that Sony will be providing with the PS4.
