In what is always an entertaining sight to behold when two major corporations square off in a public spat of words, Sony took a directly indirect shot at the fact that Microsoft will be giving away a free copy of FIFA 14 to all customers in Europe who purchase an Xbox One the day it launches.
In a report from Metro, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO Jim Ryan responded to a question that asked if Sony would be working out a deal for the PS4 that would rival what the Xbox One will feature on day one.
"Why should we do that?
"Our problem is gonna be matching supply to demand. It's perfectly rational when a platform holder, or indeed a publisher, runs a pre-order campaign to engage in promotional behavior to dial it up if you feel it's not where you need it to be. That's a rational thing for any businessman to do.
"So why would we go out and add something. Giving away stuff on day one of a new platform launch, in my mind it's kind of odd," Ryan said.
While this may just be a ploy to take a shot at Microsoft and the Xbox One, it makes one wonder if Sony will have something for the PS4 or not.
It seems to be a near inevitability that the Xbox One will be coming out with some sort of free game for the Xbox One in North America. Some people are saying it will be Madden 25, but given the unbelievable success Call of Duty has had in the United States, it wouldn't be impossible to see Ghosts be given away for free.
There will certainly be bundles for both the Xbox One and PS4 at launch, but if the Xbox One ends up being the only console that provides free giveaway titles, it may be hard for people to say no to that deal.
