Today, Sony released their financial results for the first quarter of 2014. Sony revealed that both PS3 and PS4 consoles combined sold a total of 3.5 million units. Microsoft sold a combined total of 1.1 million Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles. In comparison to Sony, Microsoft isn't doing too good, but anything over 1 million is clearly a success in today's economy. Looking at the first quarter sales figures, it seems that Sony's Playstation consoles are outselling Xbox consoles 3:1.
Sony's announcement launch of the PS4 was well-timed and perfected. Other than console sales, Sony also mentioned that they generated about $2.5 billion in sales in the same time period. This marks a huge comeback for Sony as an entertainment company. Back when the PS3 was released in 2006, sales weren't looking very good as the launch itself was a complete disaster. Luckily, Sony was able to rebound with the PS3 with a few redesigns of the console as well as the logo. Also, the PS3 launched at the cost of around $599 in comparison to the PS4's somewhat affordable $399 launch price.
The PS2 console is the most popular gaming console of all time with Nintendo's handheld DS console right behind it. Sony clearly knows what they're doing when it comes to gaming & entertainment, but Microsoft might need a little more momentum if they're trying to compete with Sony's current offerings with the PS4. Results from the second quarter of 2014 should be announced in the coming months.
