PS4 hardware specs mostly revealed minus a couple of key points

Sony opened up on the Playstation 4 hardware specs Wednesday night following the official reveal of the console. It wasn't a quite complete unveiling though as a couple of key specs were not mentioned.

The specs released match up with what has been leaked for the PS4 so far in terms of the custom CPU. They also confirmed that the Blu-ray drive will be returning with the next-generation console but with a much faster read speed than the PS3 version.

One surprise from the PS4 reveal was Sony upgrading the amount of memory from 4GB to 8GB of DDR5 memory. Previous leaks of documents and dev kits suggested only 4GB for the system but it is clear that Sony listened to developers and caught wind of what Microsoft is up to with the Xbox 720 and decided more was needed. The fact that it is DDR5 memory will add to the cost of the system, however.

So what specs are missing? Specifically, we don't know the exact speed of the "x86-64 AMD 'Jaguar' 8 core" processor. It is rumored to be around 1.6GHz to help with power and heat but that means not necessarily as fast as what is available on the PC. On the flip side, it may not need as much speed being a dedicated console processor with customizations.

Also missing is any mention of what the GPU is beyond an "AMD next-generation Radeon based graphics engine." A previous leak suggested the graphics processor uses the AMD “R10XX” (Southern Islands) architecture running at 800Mhz based on DirectX11.

The last thing missing is any mention of a hard drive size. Yes, it is built-in but Sony is obviously making a big push for downloadable games which likely means downloads in the 20GB and up range for next-gen games. That means a hefty hard drive size which we probably won't find out about until E3 when Sony announces pricing.
