PS3 firmware v3.40 detailed by Sony

Firmware v3.40 expands Facebook features.

Sony has updated the Playstation Blog today with details about the next firmware (v3.40) update for the Playstation 3. The update, which Sony says is coming soon, adds a few major features to the consoles operating system.

The first of these updates listed is the introduction of Playstation Plus, the premium subscription service that Sony is hoping players will shell-out their hard-earned dollars for on a regular basis. Sony stresses in the blog update that the current Playstation Network service will remain free, but then goes on to remind readers that Playstation Plus subscribers will be treated to a slew of exclusive features and content.

Another major feature being added is the Video Editor & Uploader. The software allows users to “edit, save and upload video files stored on the PS3 system to sites such as Facebook or YouTube.” It may be too early to tell, but at first glance the software appears to be a slicker, if not a stripped-down video editor similar to Sony’s EyeCreate software for the Playstation Eye. The major difference between the two would be that the new software would allow users to edit videos filmed from their own cameras rather than requiring them to record the videos directly from their PS3 cameras.

The update also gives users the ability to rate content purchased from the Playstation Store with a 1 - 5 star rating system. It also expands the capabilities of the Photo Gallery software as well as the Power Save settings.

Sony also announced that a new Facebook application will become available that allows users to become PSN friends directly through Facebook.com. You can find pictures and more info on the update at the Playstation Blog.
