Forecast discussion: An approaching cold front has already brought heavy rain and flooding to Maryland and North Carolina on Friday. We have seen occasional downpours in between drizzle. As the cold front inches closer, we will see heavy rain in Providence during the overnight. We may also see some isolated thunderstorms, gusty winds, and lightning. There is the chance for some minor street and river flooding. But, the heavy rain will end by Saturday morning.
The front will move offshore around noon. We will see increasing sunshine through the afternoon. We will also see our high temperature for the day late in the afternoon. Skies will slowly clear Saturday night, and we will see partly sunny skies for Sunday. However, keep an eye to the skies, as there is the small chance for a passing shower or thunderstorm.
As we head into early next week, an upper level low will get blocked from moving to the east. This low will allow colder air to come down from Canada, and remain over New England. A series of weak low pressure systems will rotate in a circular pattern. The lows may create a passing shower by Monday afternoon. By Tuesday, the upper level low moves slightly offshore. This will allow us to have dry weather, but cooler temperatures.
A low pressure system coming from the Midwest will move over Southern New England by Wednesday, giving us showers by the middle of the morning. The models show heavier rainfall during the overnight, with the precipitation tapering to showers by Thursday morning. Some warmer air will filter in, allowing our temperatures to reach near 70 degrees. A secondary low will remain over the region on Friday, producing more showers.
