Forecast discussion: A high pressure system is currently hanging over Northern New England at the moment. This high is giving Providence a beautiful day of sunshine for Tuesday, but it also is keeping colder air over the region. As we move through the week, we will feel spring begin on Thursday, but by early next week old man winter will make a return to the area.
The high will provide us with clear skies tonight, and temperatures will fall into the lower 20’s. As we move through Wednesday, winds will turn to the southeast, allowing for some warmer air to move into the area. A warm front will pass through Wednesday night, bringing some clouds by sunset, and the low’s center will help bring some light rain for Wednesday night. Temperatures will be too warm for precipitation to change to snow, so we will remain as rain into Thursday morning. Skies will bring some sunshine after the low passes to our east by Thursday afternoon.
Thursday is the first day of astronomical spring, and it will definitely feel like it. Temperatures will climb into the lower 50’s. Friday will be a tad cooler, but we will have mostly sunny skies to start the day. A quick moving low pressure system will bring some precipitation to the area by early Saturday morning. It will start off as flurries or snow showers, before warmer air arrives and changes it to rain showers. The showers will end by Saturday night.
As we start early next week, temperatures will once again be heading down. Another blast of colder air from Canada will move south and into New England. Temperatures will reach the lower 40’s on Sunday, but we will barely make it above freezing by Monday. Right now, I am watching the models to see what they will do with a developing area of low pressure off the eastern Great Lakes. This low may pass through the Northeast and bring some light snow by next Tuesday night. At this time, the American model is the only model projecting this scenario. For now, my forecast for Tuesday is quite low.
