Providence weather: Sunshine returns on Thursday

Forecast discussion: A complex low pressure system created a few showers at first during the early morning for Providence on Wednesday. Then, by the morning commute, heavy rain poured down on Providence and Kent Counties. Roads become flooded and some people had to be saved from their car. In all, Providence received 2.25 inches of rain. Smithfield received 3.61 inches. However, Islip, NY was the big winner, or big loser, depending on how you look at it. They received just over 13 inches of rain. In fact, they received five and a half inches of rain in one hour!

As we move through this evening, the double low pressure system will move to the north and east. We will see clearing skies this evening, with bright sunshine to start Thursday. High pressure over Arkansas will bring us dry weather for the first half of the weekend. Temperatures, however, will remain slightly below normal for the middle of August, as we only reach the upper 70’s.

As we move into Sunday, the computer models continue to show a low pressure system over Quebec picking up moisture from the Great Lakes. This will help bring some isolated to scattered showers over Rhode Island by Sunday afternoon. The weak front will move offshore by early Monday morning, and we will return to dry weather to begin early next week. Temperatures will slowly try to climb into the lower 80’s in the capital city.
