Providence weather: Sunshine and warm

Forecast discussion: Sunday in Providence did not start off too bad. We actually had our high temperature by the late afternoon, after cloudy skies took over by the early afternoon. There was an occasional sprinkle falling over northern Rhode Island after noon time, but mostly it was virga. Skies are now partly cloudy at T.F. Green Airport.

High pressure behind a cold front will help give us partly cloudy skies for Monday. Temperatures will remain seasonable, and long range computer models do not show a late heat wave for August. We will remain mostly in the 70’s to near 80 for the next seven days.

The next threat for any precipitation appears to be by late Wednesday afternoon. The high will keep a low pressure system now forming over Raleigh Durham, NC from moving northward. But, a wave of low pressure in western Canada could bring some scattered showers by the evening commute. The low will persist around the area into Thursday afternoon, and we might see afternoon showers. The low will slowly move offshore, but there will be enough moisture for a late afternoon shower on Friday.

As we approach the next weekend, high pressure from Canada will give us mostly sunny skies and dry weather. However, it will not feel like late August. As some kids prepare to go back to school early next week, it will feel more like September. High temperatures are only forecast to reach the lower to middle 70’s.
