Forecast discussion: Once again for the third straight week, Providence went into Saturday with a high pressure system controlling the weather pattern. However, as the weekend continues, we will begin to see a little more humidity make its way into the atmosphere. The reason is due to the switch to southwest winds, as the center of the high will move to the east of Southern New England. For now, this high will bring dry but more humid weather into Tuesday. There will be so much moisture in the air by Tuesday we will begin to see the formation of high and mid- level clouds by the afternoon. At the moment, we will see extremely warm temperatures and humid conditions for Tuesday and Wednesday.
As we head into the middle of next week, a slow moving cold front will help trigger some isolated to scattered showers by early Wednesday morning, even though the front is still in the Great Lakes. It will slowly move eastward. Also, the jet stream will create a very strong area of maximum winds right over New England on Thursday. This area will help create the possibility for some strong thunderstorms. There may be strong winds and lightning associated with them.
So, that means we are looking ahead to the long holiday weekend. Right now, it appears the front will slowly move offshore during the late morning or early afternoon on Friday. We may see some partial clearing in time for any firework shows during the evening. High pressure will once again clear our skies by next Saturday.
Also, I will be watching the Southeast U.S. very closely as well over the weekend. Believe it or not, the National Hurricane Center is watching a weak low pressure system offshore of South Carolina. Based on the current model runs, there is a 60% chance the low becomes our first tropical depression of the 2014 season. If you want to know more, you can read the story by clicking here.
