Forecast discussion: If you happened to be up at 4 a.m. Wednesday morning, you probably heard sleet bouncing off your windows. Or, if you were in East Providence, some snowflakes were falling. After receiving almost 2 inches of total precipitation in the last 24 hours, high pressure took over Wednesday morning, bringing bright sunshine. However, it also brought some very cold air, and temperatures felt more like the middle of March than the middle of April. Unfortunately, the colder weather will stick around for a few more days.
The high will also bring winds from the northeast for the next few days. This means that it will come off the colder water, keeping temperatures below seasonable, despite the higher sun angles. We will begin to return to normal by Saturday, as the high moves offshore, and winds begin to shift back to the south. A weak area of low pressure will move north of New England and to the east. We may see a widely isolated shower during the overnight on Friday, but by Saturday morning we will see limited sunshine. A new high pressure system will help clear skies by Saturday night, and give us sunny skies for Easter Sunday. Temperatures will be in the upper 50’s to lower 60’s.
On Monday, a weak area of low pressure will form along the Mid-Atlantic States, and will bring some possible showers Monday night. We will have a better chance of seeing scattered showers on Tuesday, before the low is kicked out by a new high pressure system by early Wednesday morning. The high will create some breezy conditions by the afternoon, as the low slowly departs towards Nova Scotia.
