Providence weather: Sunny and warmer for Sunday

Forecast discussion: After some cloudy skies during the early morning on Saturday, we woke up to some sunshine and mid-level clouds. However, as the day warmed up, this helped to heat the atmosphere, and create cloudy conditions by noon. But, the sun returned during the late afternoon, making for a nice sunset.

A strong high pressure system will come down from Quebec, Canada and keep a strong ridge over New England for the next several days. Temperatures will be slowly warming into the lower to middle 80’s as we come to the last full week of August. Many school systems in Rhode Island will begin school by Wednesday. A weak cold front may bring some scattered showers late Wednesday night. They will last until the kids head to the bus stop and make it into school. A new high pressure system will bring clearing skies by Thursday afternoon. Cooler air behind the front will return us to seasonable temperatures by the end of the week.

We will see increasing clouds by Saturday afternoon, in anticipation of a new cold front bringing some showers for next Sunday.
Meanwhile, the National Hurricane Center has finally started advisories on Tropical Depression Four. The first advisory for the system came out as of 5 p.m. EDT. As of 8 p.m. EDT, Four was centered at 22.0N 72.4W, or about 80 miles northeast of Great Inagua Island. Maximum sustained winds are at 35 mph, and is moving northwest at 11 mph.

Watches and Warnings are in effect for many islands in the central Bahamas. The forecast calls for the system to become a hurricane by Tuesday afternoon. The current tracks actually take the system towards the east coast. Four will eventually turn to the north and northeast by Wednesday afternoon. However, several hurricane models move the system into the Carolinas and make landfall by early next week. Also, we may see some showers and rainfall should the tropical remain moving north into the Mid-Atlantic. I will continue to monitor the system and provide you with a new update tomorrow night.
