Forecast discussion: A strong high pressure system passing south into the Great Lakes brought Providence a great Saturday. Temperatures climbed into the middle to upper 80’s today, with T.F. Green officially seeing a high temperature of 87 degrees. But, the low humidity made the day hot, but bearable. We could have seen a heat index in the lower 90’s if the humidity was higher.
The high will continue to control our weather pattern for the rest of the weekend. So, any outdoor activities or games, like the Jeffrey Osborne Softball Charity Game at McCoy Stadium will go on as scheduled Sunday evening. The high will continue to give us nice weather through the start of the work week. But, as we approach the middle of the week, the weather will change.
A low pressure system is expected to form near North and South Carolina over the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, a cold front now in the Northern Plains will slowly work its way into the Tri-State area by Monday night. These two systems will combine their energy by Tuesday morning. We will begin to feel the effects by the evening commute, as the models feel we could see some scattered showers. Then, moving into the overnight, the low near the Carolinas will move to the north and east.
During this time, more upper level energy will begin to move over Southern New England. So, as we go into Wednesday, there is a small chance that any embedded thunderstorms could become severe. At this time, it is still way too early to make an accurate account about severe weather. But, there could be areas that see up to 2 or even 3 inches of rain before the system moves into Maine early Thursday morning.
For the rest of the week, a high pressure ridge will give us dry weather. However, the front will bring cooler air over New England, with high temperatures moving into the weekend to only reach the upper 70’s. The best chance to see 80 degrees will be by next Saturday.
Finally, now that Iselle has passed Hawaii, the island now braces for the effects of Hurricane Julio. Julio was a Category 2 hurricane as of Saturday morning. The National Hurricane Center believes Julio will move north of the big island by Sunday morning, with wind speeds of about 75 mph. For more information on Julio, click here.
