Providence weather: Summer-like weather for Monday

The temperature forecast for Southern New England at 2 p.m. EDT on June 2, 2014
The temperature forecast for Southern New England at 2 p.m. EDT on June 2, 2014

Forecast discussion: A strong high pressure system brought dry weather to the entire east coast on Sunday, including Providence. It felt like a June day, with warm temperatures, along with bright sunshine. We will see one more day of very warm weather before a strong cold front brings some precipitation to the region from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday.

The high will remain in charge of our weather into tomorrow night. Winds will remain from the southwest, so warmer air will filter into New England. By early Tuesday morning, we will begin to see some mid and high level clouds build into our skies. The cloud cover will be due to an approaching cold front which is now bringing severe weather and some tornadoes into Nebraska and Kansas. We will see the first showers by Tuesday afternoon, in advance of the cold front. The front will take some time to make its way to the east coast, as a low pressure system in the Atlantic will block the boundary. This will allow the warm front to dip south of the area on Wednesday. We will see the chance for heavier rainfall, along with some scattered thunderstorms Tuesday night. As the low in the Atlantic dissipates, the frontal boundaries will pass through. Our high temperature on Wednesday will only be 70 degrees.

As we head towards the end of the week, the upper level pattern shows zonal flow, meaning systems will be moving in a straight west to east motion. A weak disturbance may bring some showers and thunderstorms by early Thursday afternoon. We will see some partial clearing on Friday afternoon, once all the precipitation moves offshore. A weak disturbance may help create some showers during Saturday morning. Otherwise, high pressure will bring drier air and cooler temperatures to end the weekend.
