Providence weather: Second half of weekend getting wet?

Forecast discussion: A strong high pressure ridge from the Atlantic brought us a delightful Saturday. Also, rip currents at the beaches are slowing decaying, as waves become calmer. However, as we enter the second half of the weekend, we will see the risk of showers and thunderstorms. Also, there may be periods of heavy rainfall in isolated areas.

The possible precipitation will be due to a low pressure system moving over Michigan. The low will slowly move eastward toward Southern New England. We will see the risk of showers and thunderstorms by the late afternoon. It will also be quite humid, as our winds have turned to the south-southwest. The cold front will slowly move into New England on Labor Day, so we will continue to see the risk of showers and thunderstorms. The cold front will not pass offshore until late Monday night.

We will see limited sunshine on Tuesday, as we will still have a low of moisture in our atmosphere. A weak cold front will pass late Tuesday night, bringing the risk of a few showers early Wednesday morning. Eventually, high pressure will build over the eastern U.S., helping to bring dry air over the region. Dewpoint temperatures will become comfortable once again, and highs will remain in the lower 80’s. As we head into Saturday, a cold front from Canada will help bring the risk of showers by the late afternoon. We will see high temperatures dip into the upper 70’s by next Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the tropics have a disturbance near the Bay of Campeche. The models believe the disturbance will move into the Southwest Gulf by Monday. At this time there is only a 20% chance of becoming a tropical system within 48 hours.
