Providence weather: Return of showers on Thursday

The precipitation forecast for Southern New England at 2 p.m. on June 12, 2014
The precipitation forecast for Southern New England at 2 p.m. on June 12, 2014

Forecast discussion: It felt a little cooler if you were heading to work this morning to Providence, or within the inland part of Rhode Island. This was due to a back door cold front that brought easterly winds and drier air. However, the cold front has changed back to a warm front. The warm front will slowly push back into New England, so we may see some passing showers ahead of the front during Wednesday night.

As we head into Thursday, a very weak high pressure ridge will hold off shower activity until the afternoon. The warm front will return, and we will see more shower and possible thunderstorm activity by the early afternoon. As we go into Thursday night, a cold front over North and South Dakota will slowly begin to work its way east. A weak low off the Delmarva Peninsula at the moment will help enhance more precipitation Thursday night into Friday. The cold front will begin to push through Friday night. The front will move offshore by early Saturday morning, but showers will linger into early Saturday afternoon.

After the front passes, high pressure near the Pacific Northwest will bring nice weather late Saturday afternoon into Monday night. High temperatures will climb back into the upper 70’s, with low temperatures Monday night in the middle 60’s. We will see more cloud cover early Tuesday morning, as a new cold front will bring showers hours later. The front will push offshore by Wednesday morning, with limited sunshine for the rest of the day. Temperatures on Wednesday will reach the middle to upper 70’s.
