Forecast discussion: You probably noticed a lot of melting during Thursday, as temperatures hit the upper 40’s in Providence. The warm weather will continue through the weekend, but we must deal with some precipitation for Friday.

The latest radar imagery shows light to moderate rain moving over Rhode Island at the moment. This is due to a warm front crossing through Ohio and West Virginia. We will see moderate to heavy rain during the day, especially during the afternoon hours. This may create street flooding, due to any remaining snowfall clogging storm drains. I would not be surprised if you get an isolated thunderstorm, along with some gusty winds. The rainfall will taper off by the evening, with all precipitation ending around midnight.

As we move into the weekend, a strong high pressure ridge will build over Southern New England from the west. We will have dry weather, but temperatures will begin to slowly decrease. We will have high temperatures remain above freezing, but we will see temperatures below freezing by Sunday night. In fact, isolated snow showers are possible Sunday night into Monday, as some moisture passes through the area, along with a frontal boundary.

By Monday, temperatures will make us remember we are still in winter. Highs will barely get to freezing. Also, I am watching the models very carefully for a coastal low developing Tuesday morning. Right now, a weaker low over New York will help create some snow showers by the middle of the morning on Wednesday. We may see light snow right into Wednesday evening, before ending around early Thursday morning. We will return to dry weather next Thursday.
