Providence weather: Precipitation ending Saturday afternoon

The expected temperature for Southern New England at 2 p.m. EDT on June 14, 2014
The expected temperature for Southern New England at 2 p.m. EDT on June 14, 2014

Forecast discussion: You may have been soaked if you happened to be outside near Providence during the middle of Friday morning. A low pressure system combined with a warm front is moving into the Mid-Atlantic. This low brought periods of heavy rainfall into Rhode Island. T.F. Green Airport has already received less than an inch of rain today, and we will continue to add to that total into this evening.

The low will combine with a cold front passing into western New York and Pennsylvania at the moment. This combination will bring more periods of heavy rain into early Saturday morning. The chance for a thunderstorm will persist into the early afternoon, as the front will take longer to move offshore. We may see some partial sunshine before the end of the day. Temperatures will climb into the upper 70’s as the warm front pushes through Southern New England. The cold front will push offshore tomorrow night.

By early Sunday morning, we will have partly cloudy skies, thanks to a high pressure system reaching the Central Plains. This high will bring dry weather, fair skies, and summerlike temperatures for Father’s Day and Monday. The high will move off into the Atlantic by Monday night. By Tuesday morning, a new cold front will bring the risk of scattered showers. But, a lot of the moisture will move off to our north. So, we will see an end to the shower activity by the early afternoon. A weak disturbance will bring limited sunshine but another chance for possible shower on Wednesday.

We will come to the end of next week with a new high pressure system controlling our weather pattern. We will see partly to mostly sunny skies with seasonable temperatures.
