Providence weather: More clouds and cooler on Monday

The expected temperature for Southern New England at 2 p.m. EDT on June 9, 2014
The expected temperature for Southern New England at 2 p.m. EDT on June 9, 2014

Forecast discussion: A strong high pressure system now offshore of North Carolina continued the perfect weekend for Providence. There was a little more cloud cover in the skies than Saturday, but that did not stop our high temperature from reaching 85 degrees. The high will continue to give us dry weather this evening, but we will begin to see more cloud cover by Monday morning.

The cloud cover will be due to two systems. The first is a weak cold front passing the Great Lakes. The second is a low pressure system centered over Ohio. The two systems will remain almost stationary over the east coast for the next few days. The high should stop any showers from arriving until late Monday night. But, we will see some scattered showers and thunderstorms for all of Tuesday.

The computer models are coming to a better agreement on the rest of the week. By Wednesday, some moisture will move offshore, allowing for some partial sunshine for Wednesday. However, a much stronger low pressure system moving east in Canada will bring a long cold front towards the east coast, starting on Thursday. The actual front will not pass through New England until Friday night. There might be a brief period of dry weather Thursday night, before we see more precipitation for all of Friday.

As we move into next weekend, the cold front will finally move off into the Atlantic by Saturday morning. We should see some sunshine before the day is out, and temperatures will climb back into the middle 70’s. We will return to mostly sunny skies next Sunday, with temperatures reaching the lower to middle 70’s.
