Forecast discussion: After heavy rainfall flooded roads and even an apartment complex in central Rhode Island yesterday, Providence had a quieter weather day. Although some showers hit the capital city, the state did not see the heavy rainfall from a cold front which was passing through Southern New England. However, parts of Newport County were hit with some severe thunderstorms, and people have lost power. However, drier weather is expected to take us into the weekend.
With the cold front leaving some thunderstorms along the northern region of Cape Cod at the moment, the front will move offshore, allowing for a strong high pressure system centered over Illinois to bring drier air into the Northeast U.S. We will see mostly sunny skies with temperatures near 80 degrees.
As we approach Wednesday evening, a cold front moving into the northern Central Plains will be passing through Southern New England on Thursday. This front will bring cooler air behind it, as well as create some isolated showers by the late morning. However, any shower activity will end as we enter the evening commute. Skies will begin to clear Thursday night, and temperatures will reach the upper 40’s. I would not be surprised if parts of northwest Rhode Island see temperatures fall into the lower 40’s.
Temperatures will remain cool on Friday, with daytime highs only in the lower 70’s. But, as winds turn to the southwest, we will return to normal temperatures for early September. We will return to mostly sunny skies once again on Saturday, but a new cold front coming down from Canada will bring cloudy skies and some isolated showers for Sunday.
The cold front will pass to our south by Sunday night, with a new high pressure system bringing mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the lower 70’s during the day on Monday and next Tuesday. Overnight low temperatures will be in the lower to middle 50’s.
